How to create self-care habits you stick to?

Making time for yourself isn't easy, even though you know you need to. Let’s be honest, knowing what you need and when you need it can be a challenge.

It’s easy to keep pushing on when things need to get done and get swept up in the fear of not having enough time. Resistance is real and seems to become even more stubborn when you need self-care the most.

With all that you are doing, where are you giving yourself space to be restored, feel energised, uplifted and reconnected?

The truth is, no day will be the same, you know this; no matter how hard you plan and prepare there’s usually something that pops up unexpectedly; waking up in a bad mood, a spot on your chin (hi, that’s me this week!), tech blips at the most inconvenient times and people requiring more from you than you have the energy to give.

What if you took 5-minutes a day, maybe 30-minutes to make time for yourself? In those moments you’d create space; space to breathe, to reflect and to feel; a chance to actually honour what you’re feeling. This my friend is when the magic happens; when you get to ask yourself; what do I need?

You see, different days call for different tools. It’s as much about having a spiritual satchel of practices to use as it is about having the awareness of what and when you need them the most.

Forming a habit takes several steps but first, you’ve got to want to start and put your energy into it.

Here are some simple steps to get you started…

1. Set an intention

2. Make a plan (and a plan B for when life gets in the way!)

3. Ask for some support and healthy, encouraging accountability

4. Work it into an existing routine - this will help you create structure

5. Keep up the practice - the physical practice of the habit and the practice of these 5 steps.

All of this will help you find your rhythm and in time you’ll find yourself naturally living this way and not thinking about it. Lastly, have patience, if you ask me, patience, awareness and compassion are the 3 ingredients for some seriously sustainable self-care!

“You’re my good habit!”
— Kate, The Big Love Yoga Community

Kate’s yoga and mindfulness practice has been more than a habit for a while; it’s now a lifestyle choice. Two years in The Big Love Yoga Community (live yoga online, from home) and Kate shows up twice a week on her mat at the side of her bed proving that you don’t need a lot of space and that habits soon become a lifestyle choice. Kate’s commitment to her personal health and well-being inspires me, as do all the yogi’s in the community because it’s not easy sticking to things with so much going on!
